HOW HE GOT AWAY
MERGER/TRADE: Smith was part of the Cleveland franchise when it folded after the 1977-78 season. He became property of Minnesota when it absorbed the Cleveland team. Minnesota later traded him with Don Murdoch and 1982 first-round pick (Murray Craven) to Detroit in exchange for 1982 first-round pick (Brian Bellows) on Aug. 21, 1981. The initial exchange of first-round picks was classified as Minnesota's option to switch picks in 1982. Minnesota did exercise this option.
