Miscellaneous: Left unprotected by Montreal in 1979 NHL Expansion Draft, but was re-claimed as a fill-in after Cam Connor was selected off Montreal roster on June 13, 1979. Montreal had made pre-drafts deal with the expansion teams to ensure that Lupien would not be selected in the draft and could be reclaimed as a fill-in.  ... Missed part of 1979-80 season with groin injury suffered in March 1980. ... Scored two goals in first game with Hartford on Feb. 22, 1981, vs. N.Y. Rangers. ... Was tallest defenseman in NHL during his playing days.

The rink in his hometown of Brownsburg, Quebec, was named Gilles Lupien Arena in his honor.

HOW HE GOT AWAY
TRADE: Montreal traded Lupien to Pittsburgh in exchange for 1983 third-round pick (later traded) on Sept. 26, 1980.
