Missed remainder of 1990-91 regular season with left foot injury, suffered during Boston's Dec. 16, 1990, exhibition game vs. touring Soviet Khimik team. Although he was suspended from playing in NHL games during that period, he was allowed to play in the exhibition game, which proved to be even more costly than his suspension. Because he was suspended, Byers did not realize his foot was broken for nearly three weeks after suffering the injury, which required surgery to repair a broken navicular bone on Feb. 8, 1991. In his attempt to come back from the surgery, Byers re-broke his left foot during Boston's practice on March 25, 1991. As a result, he missed the remainder of the 1990-91 regular season and the start of the 1991 playoffs. He did not return to action until Game 4 of Boston's Wales Conference finals series at Pittsburgh on May 7, 1991. ... Released by San Jose in March 1993, ending his NHL career.
Byers' Big Suspension: The NHL suspended Byers for 10 games during the 1990-91 season because he left the bench to join a fight during Boston's 8-2 win vs. Hartford on Dec. 13, 1990. The incident began when Ed Kastelic elbowed Boston's Craig Janney, drawing a five-minute penalty. As the Bruins players converged on Kastelic to protect Janney, Byers came off the bench to help them out -- forcing the referees to throw Byers out of the game and submit the incident for NHL review. The NHL acted swiftly to punish Byers, announcing a 10-game suspension on Dec. 14, 1990. Boston coach Mike Milbury was also suspended five games. Byers was not allowed to return to action until Boston's Jan. 7, 1991 game vs. Winnipeg. He never did manage to come back, however, because during the time he was suspended, Byers broke his left foot in a game against a Soviet touring team.
