Kontos' Holdout: Kontos was suspended by the N.Y. Rangers early in the 1983-84 season for refusing to report to Tulsa (CHL). Kontos had failed to make the Rangers' roster out of training camp in September 1983, but did not want to play in the minor leagues. While suspended, he remained at home in Toronto and demanded a trade because he did not think the Rangers wanted to make him one of their regular centers. The suspension lasted until January 1984, when, after talking with general manager Craig Patrick over the New Year's holiday, Kontos finally changed his mind and accepted the minor-league demotion.
