AWARDS AND HONORS CHL All-Star First Team: 1980-81 (Wichita) WHA Draft Pick: 1975 (by
Baltimore, No. 3 overall in Round 1) Miscellaneous: Selected by
Baltimore (WHA) team that folded shortly after the 1975 WHA draft. His rights
were claimed by Calgary during June 1975 special draft of players from defunct
WHA teams. ... Sat out
most of 1978-79 season in retirement. He started season in minors, was called
up to Toronto, then chose to announce retirement rather than return to minors.
Came out of retirement after Toronto traded him to Colorado. ... Was
second-leading scorer in 1981 CHL playoffs. ... Died from injuries suffered in
a head-on car-crash in Summerland, B.C., on May 30, 1981. The accident took
place 12 days after Ashby's Wichita team lost to Salt Lake in the CHL
championship series. Ashby, 26, had returned home to British Columbia for the
summer. ... The CHL renamed its Iron Man Award the Don Ashby Memorial Trophy
in 1981. ... Wichita (CHL) players wore a patch honoring Ashby's No. 18 for
the 1981-82 season. Personal: Nicknamed "Ants." ... Full name is
Donald Allan Ashby. |
