Coaching Career: Named head coach of Weyburn (SJHL) in December 1978 and remained in position until November 1980. He also served as Weyburn general manager in 1980-81.

Career Beyond Hockey: Returned to his hometown of Lang, Saskatchewan, and went into farming after his retirement.

Family: Older brother of former NHL player Dennis Sobchuk. ... Uncle of former minor-league baseball pitcher Justin Sobchuk, a 1999 10th-round draft choice of the Oakland Athletics who turned down a scholarship offer to San Diego State to go pro.

Significant Injuries

Missed part of 1972-73 season with collapsed lung and appendectomy. ... Missed most of 1976-77 season with compound fracture in left wrist, an injury suffered when he crashed into the goalpost during Cincinnati's Sept. 25, 1976, WHA preseason game at Quebec. The injury required surgery. He was unable to play until January 1977, when he returned to action with Springield (AHL).

Miscellaneous:

Selected by Los Angeles Sharks in 1972 WHA Draft -- the first WHA Draft -- in February 1972. Played RW on line with brother Dennis for Cincinnati (WHA) during the 1975-76 season. In June 1976 WHA trade to Florida for Bryan Maxwell that was nixed when team was sold. Was a member of the Hampton Gulls (AHL) team that folded on Feb. 2, 1978.
