- Played for Sorel (QJHL) in 1969 Memorial Cup
tournament.
- Played two games for St. Catharines (OHA) in
1969-70, recording one assist and nine penalty minutes.

OHA rights traded by St. Catharines to Peterborough in exchange for
Bill Ellis on Nov. 20, 1969. Trade came after a dispute resulting
from OHA's Oct. 9, 1969, decision to raid WCHL for a handful of
players, including Irwin, as a retaliation for the WCHL declaring
itself independent of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. Other
OHA teams complained that St. Catharines had too many Western
players on its roster. At time the trade was being made, OHA ruled
the excess Western players ineligible and returned Irwin to WCHL.

Served as Estevan (WCHL) captain in 1970-71.
- Led WCHL with 261 penalty minutes for Estevan in 1970-71.
- Missed most of 1972-73 season with
broken ankle, an injury suffered while playing for Richmond (AHL).

March 5, 1973, trade in which N.Y. Islanders traded Terry Crisp to

he tripped on a stick at the end of a fight with Ken Baird in a game
WHA between Houston and Edmonton.
