Featherstone was part of a controversy in June 1973 when Rochester (AHL) tried to claim him from Montreal in the annual Reverse Draft even though he had already been traded to Minnesota. It dated back to the June1972, trade that sent Featherstone from Montreal to the Islanders and the subsequent return of Featherstone to Montreal when he and Murray Anderson failed to make the Islanders roster out of training camp in 1972. Rochester said this was done to circumvent the 1973 Reverse Draft and claimed Featherstone, feeling his trade to Minnesota should be voided. NHL President Clarence Campbell ruled him ineligible for the Reverse Draft because he was never listed on either the Islanders' or Montreal NHL rosters even though he had signed an NHL contract with the Islanders before being returned.

May 29, 1973 -- Traded by Montreal with Murray Anderson to Minnesota in exchange for future considerations (cash). June 16, 1974 -- Signed three-year WHA contract with Toronto.
