Canadian • Born October 1947 in
Kingston, Ontario • Hometown:

Miscellaneous
Full Name:
Douglas Glen Shirton
Post-Draft Teams: Oshawa (OHA); Whitby, Kingston (OHA Jr. B)
Career Beyond Hockey: Went to
work for City of Kingston after his career ended in 1968. He eventually
rose to be Supervisor of the city's Water and Sewer Department, retiring
in 2005.
Family: Younger brother of former
minor-leaguer Ron Reid.
Traded for Ken Dryden: Reid
will be forever known in hockey history as one of the two players, along
with Guy Allen, who were traded
by Montreal to Boston in exchange for Hall of Famer Ken Dryden. The trade, one of the most famous in
NHL history, was Sam Pollock's first as Canadiens GM. Ironically, Reid never heard
about the trade and just assumed he had been drafted by
Boston -- the only team that ever contacted him and invited him to a
major junior team's training camp. It wasn't until nearly 40 years later
-- in 2002 -- that he was informed by some fans that he was, in fact,
drafted by Montreal and traded for Ken Dryden.
