1988-89. ... Had assist in his first NHL game. ... Played on line with
Brendan Shanahan and John McLean for New Jersey in 1989-90 and 1990-91. ...
Missed part of 1990-91 season with strained rib cage, an injury suffered
during New Jersey's Oct. 7, 1990, game at Pittsburgh. He did not return to
action until New Jersey's Oct. 13, 1990, game vs. Calgary. ... Played on
line with Brendan Shanahan and Zdeno Ciger for New Jersey in 1990-91.
Two Lost Seasons:
Morris made New Jersey's roster out of training camp in
1988, but lasted only nine games before being demoted to Utica (AHL) on Oct.
27, 1988. Rather than report to Utica, he returned to his hometown of
Lowell, Mass., to work out what were termed "personal problems," later
reported to be homesickness. The team had given him
permission for a short break from hockey before joining Utica, but Morris
never reported to the minor-league affiliate. On Nov. 12, 1988, as Morris
passed the two-week mark without having shown up in Utica, New Jersey
suspended him indefinitely. During this time, he went back to the University
of Lowell to finish his bachelor's degree. He spent the
remainder of the 1988-89 season in Lowell, but did not play competitive
hockey during this time. He finally rejoined the Devils on Sept. 26, 1989,
and was assigned to Utica. This time he managed to report. He was eventually
recalled to the NHL on Jan. 27, 1990. Two years later, Morris found himself
in a similar situation when the Devils suspended him for refusing to
continue playing in Utica in December 1991. Again, he went home to Lowell
and did not play for the rest of a 1991-92 season. In June 1992, his Devils
contract expired, making him a restricted free agent. He played for
Cincinnati (IHL) without signing a contract at the beginning of the 1992-93 season
before opting to re-sign with New Jersey and report to Utica on Dec. 29,
1992. |

hockey program's 30th anniversary in 1997. ... Became a staff coach at The
Hockey Academy in Hudson, N.H., after his retirement, and also coached youth
hockey.
